What is editing?

What makes up a shot:

What shots are used?
How many shot are used?
How long are the shots?
How are they ordered?
How does it work with the narritive?
Timing?
Editing effects?

Transitions

Tansitions are used between two different shots, when the scene changes a transition is used to add effect to the change in scene to make the film look more professional here are some examples:
- Common cut, which links to the next shot.
- Striaght cut, where it just changes to the next shot
- Dissolve, where the screen uses a dissolving effect.
- Fade, black to white vise versa.
- Fade in and out, for example a montage.
- Cross cutting where the slide cuts to the next one.
- Wipe, like a cross cut but smoother usually a diagonal line.
- Jump out, very dramatic, an instant change.

Visual effect

This is where the shot might have some visual effect on the picture which changes the mood of the ofthe audience as they are watching for example in a horror film when something unexspected happens or mysterious music is played it changes the action and creates tension and suspence which make you feel uncomfitable as the audience.

Sound

sound is also used when editing effects because within a film the editor wants to use a range of diegetic and non diegetic sound with in the film they might use naterual diegetic sounds to add nateral sound effects for example the wind and creeky doors. the editor will also want to use non diegetic as well to a more effect and tension that you might not get normally, an example of this is music and heart beats to add tension during a scene. with all these effects it can change the mood of the film by using tempo to icrease the speed to create suspence the same really with the volume and tone because it will get the audience gripped in and to tell them somethings going to happen next.

Crescendo is the biuld of sound comapared with the tension which is displayed into a graph so you can see when the sound builds up and gets fast the tensions starts to increase for example a film that this happens in is 'Jaws' when the people are on the boat and the music increase the tempo and volume to give suspence and tell you that something bad is going to happen, when the shark attacks the beat becomes tense. it is usually made up of 'Non-Diegetic' sound where the editor has made it up to put in to show the build up of tension in a specific scene. This also happens during horros and physcological thrillers where the music will change and give a differnet mood, this is called 'Enigma' where the music is used to create a sence of mystery.
