Mise-En-Scene In Thrillers

Mise-En-Scene

Visual elements in the scene:

- Lighting.
- Props.
- Make up.
- Actors.
- Clothing/Costume.
- Setting.
- Background
- Camera Work
- Visual Effect

'Mise-En-Scene' = Having put inthe scene.
'Auteur' = Directors with a specific style.
'Star Persona' = Actor with a specific style.
'Opening Title' = Where you show an actors name at the start. (like the credits)

Why Is It Important?

- It sets the mood.
- Creates the scene.
- Makes it look more professional.
- Distinguishs the genre.

How is the Mes typically of the Thriller genre

Sound: The sound is typically used in thrillers to create the mood during the film example of when sound is used in a thriller would be when everything is normal and then a non diegetic sound might be used to create tension for example a door could close behind someone and create a loud noise to make the audience feel uncomfortable when watching the film. The director could also use diegetic sound for example if someone looks out a window and they can hear the wind both inside and outside an old house. For example in the film ' the woman in black' there is a house in the middle of nowhere there is lots of sound to set the mood.

Editing: In films Editing is typically used to add special effects and to improve certain scene for example to add sound effects into a scene like lose floor boards whiched are used in Thrillers/Horrors to add an effect and to get to audience of the edge of their seat because the action has created the mood and suspense which makes you feel uncomfortable.

Camera work: In films Camera work is used to make the film more appealing for example if it was one type of shot throughout the film it would get boring, the use of different shots in the film adds different affects for example an over the shoulder shot shows from the characters point of view. An extreme close up gives the expression of the character. Etc...

Audience: The audience is used to aim the film around so if you want to make a film you must make sure that it is aimed at a specific audience so it appeals to the audience. If you want the film to be view by everyone you must make sure it is suitable for the audience.

Linking to a film: 'Snatch'

Costume: the characters in the film 'Snatch' all where suits this shows that might be higher class but there not they are actually bank robbers, the suits show that they might be part of a gang. When they steal the goods they wear masks to cover their faces so they don't get caught. finally the way they where black and hide their face away with the glasses show that there up to no good.

Lighting: the lighting that is used is quite dark because it creates the mood that they don't want  to be seen in the act the use of dark lighting and dark clothes doesn't give the audience a clear view of the characters.

Props: In 'Snatch' there are lots of props that are used for example after they have done the robbery it shows the money and the jewellery that the characters are throwing about because they have no respect for the items. The gun that is shown shows that there might be a death in the film. Finally the masks that they use when breaking into the bank show that they care about not being seen or caught.

Sound: diegetic sound that is used in the film is the dialogue between the character on set so a normal conversation is diegetic. Non-diegetic sound is also used in 'Snatch' when the music is playing in the background because it has been made and is not natural.

Editing: the editing that has been used to flow with the pace of the music so the speed of the music is very fast paced so the shot speed that is used changes faster than normal.
