Thriller Task: Timeline

This is our timeline for our thriller.

The first part of the opening titles are going to consist of mainly long shots of the area and abandoned building. This is where the first titles will appear.

The second part of the titles will feature slow pans through the building corridors and rooms. This will help to give a mysterious feel about the setting which  makes the audience feel uncomfortable because anything could happen around the corner.

The third bit of the titles will to introduce you to the protagonist in a room. The actors name will appear on the screen. It will then show his survival gear and then his family photo. We are only going to feature quick 1 to 3 second long, close-up shots of the items because we don't want everything to be too obvious and to be too boring.

The next section of the titles will show the man standing with his back to the wall and the vehicle driving up to the building. The soldiers will exit the car and will move up and through the building. The shots will again be close-ups of the man, soldiers and the vehicle.

The final part of the titles will show the business man entering the room and picking up the photo. A car engine will be heard in the distance and a shot will show a dead driver on the floor with the car driving off in the distance. The shots will still consist of close-ups of certain parts of the props and the business mans face. The screen will go black and show the title 'On The Run' in a torn/damaged typography.

Location Scouting

Because we didn't have permission and it was unsafe, we had to change our location. We decided to use the storage area of a DIY shop. This turned out to be better for our thriller because he is in a less secluded area which makes more sense. Also the area will be dark which will create a better effect of mystery. Thriller Task: Character Profiles

Wanted Man

• Age: Late 20s

• Occupation: Unknown

• Appearance: Dark hair, brown eyes, unshaven

Not much is known about this character, all the audience know is that he has a family and is on the run from a group of armed men. This implies he has done something to provoke a group or organisation.

Armed Men

• Ages: Mid 20s-30s

• Occupations: Henchmen for unknown group/organisation

• Appearance: Wearing black military-like attire

A group of heavily armed men suggests that the man they are chasing has either done something to aggravate someone or has something that they want, and are willing to use force to get what they want.

Suited Man

• Age: 40s

• Occupation: Unknown- involved with some sort of group/organisation

• Appearance: Suited, wearing shades

This character has an air of authority and importance showing that he is high ranking in whatever group/organisation he comes from

Driver - Played by Sam Hargrave (He is playing as him also because the two characters are not in the same shot and he will wear a mask so no one can tell who he is.

Thriller Auditions

For our thriller we had to cast for the role of the protagonist. We had 7, 16-17 year old boys audition for the part.

Here is their auditions.

The first audition was by Joseph. His audition was very exaggerated and we didn't think that he would be a suitable actor for our thriller. 
The second audition was by Matthew and it was very poor and it was clear that he did not want the role. Therefore, we didn't choose him.
Next was Sam's audition which was exaggerated but we thought that he could tone it down a little and be more serious. 
Owen's audition was also exaggerated and we did not think that he look the part. 
Finally, Archie's audition was funny which would not be suitable for our thriller.

In the end we decided to give Sam Hargrave the role of the protagonist. The reason that we chose him was because he was the most convincing and he has previous experience in acting.

Thriller Task: Shot List

This is our shot lost for our thriller opening.

This is what we are going to film and what shot types we will use, which will help us know what we need to film on the day so that we don't waste any time. However, we might take more shots depending on what effect it creates and if we want to capture something else.

Auditions for 'On The Run'

Thriller Task: Risk Assessment

When filming our thriller opening we must be cautious of any dangers or trouble that might happen.

The Dangers

-There might be sharp objects that could cut us so we must be cautious of them. We will also take a first aid kit just in case one of us gets cut or injured.

-When we are filming with replica weapons we have to be careful of by passers, to be make them aware of what we are doing we will put up signs telling them that filming is in progress and that replica guns are being used.

We might also have to inform the police that we are filming just so that they know, just in case a call is made.

-We also need to make sure that the building is abandoned before the shoot day because we don't want to trespass and if it is then we will have to find a new location.

Thriller Task: Filming Schedule

We will be filming our thriller opening on Thursday 27th November 2014.

Schedule

Start of the day- We will need to get to the location first.

We will then set up the first scene of the protagonist in the building.

We will then film that scene.

Later- We will film the shots where the soldiers move through the building and into the room.

Finally- We will film the car arriving and leaving, when it is available to us.

Thriller Task: Props, Costume and Location

Props

Pistol
-The pistol is a G18 airsoft gun.
-It will be used by the man who is hiding, however, he will not fire it. It will be on the floor up until the point that the car arrives and he will pick it up when he gets up against the wall.
-It is a typical thriller prop because most thrillers involve guns and weapons. It is also usually used by someone who is on the run.
-The gun signifies that the man isn't homeless but he is on the run and most likely dangerous. It could also give a clue as to what he did before hand.

Assault Rifles
-They are black machine guns.
-They will be used by the men who show up on the car, however, they will also not be fired.
-They are also a typical thriller prop because they are usually used by government agencies or the police.
-The rifles show the difference in power between the men carrying them and the man hiding. They are bigger and more powerful than his pistol. This also creates the effect that -he is strong if they need all of that to take him down.

The Sleeping Bag
-It is just a basic fold away sleeping bag.
-It will be placed beside the man hiding out.-It isn't a very typical thriller prop but it will aid the story line.

-The sleeping bag will create the effect that the man does not have a permanent place to live and that he is on the run.

Rucksack
-It is a big, expedition size sleeping bag.
-It will be place beside the man and his gear.
-A backpack of some sort is a common prop in crime thrillers where someone is on the run because it shows that they are mobile and that they can't stay in places for long.
-The bag will help to create the effect that he is on the run.


Canned Food and Water
-These props are tin cans of beans and tuna and there are some bottles of water.
-They will be in a pile around him.
-These are usually typical props in thrillers similar to ours, where there is someone hiding out or trying to survive.
-They will help make the protagonist appear that he is on the run and hiding out.

Family Photo
-This is a photo of the man and his wife and daughter. The photo will be folded over on him.
-The photo will be on the floor and it will be picked up by the man in the suit at the end.
-This type of prop is usually used in thrillers to show that the protagonist has a family.
-The photo will make the protagonist appear as if he has a family to lose so he is going to fight hard and strong. However, it could also imply that they are already dead so he has nothing to lose.

Litter/Newspapers
-It is food wrappers and scrunched up newspapers on the floor.
-They will be used to make the building look abandoned and like it is a dump.
-They are used in some types of thrillers where a building or area is shown to be abandoned or deserted.
-They make the setting appear abandoned and will make it appear like a good place for him to hide out.

4X4 Car
-It is a Land Rover 4X4 car.
-It will be used by the government agency and the soldiers.
-Big 4X4 vehicles are used in thriller films that involve government agencies or SWAT because it shows authority and power.
-The car create the effect that the agency and soldiers are powerful and stronger than the protagonist.



Costumes

The man (Protagonist)
-He will be wearing walking trousers, a black t-shirt, a black coat, and walking boots.
-This character's costume shows that he is on the run and follows the style of social realism, which is the typical style of the mise-en-scene in thriller films. He is mainly wearing dark clothing to make him appear mysterious and to hide his identity.

Military/Government Agency Personnel
-They will be wearing black clothing, e.g. boots, gloves and balaclavas. They will also be wearing assault vests.
-This costume has been selected because the colour adds an air of mystery to the armed group of men, and suits the typical mise-en-scene conventions in thriller films. The assault vests create the effect that these are trained soldiers with experience.

Suited Man
-He will wear a suit and smart shoes
-The suit creates an air of importance and also mystery as to why he is there and what he wants. This sense of mystery will help add to the tension, which is a key part of the thriller genre. The shoes are important because they show authority when he gets out of the car because they are different to the soldiers.

Driver
-He will wear black clothing, e.g. hat, jacket, boots and sunglasses.
-This costume was decided upon for similar reasons to the armed men because it creates mystery and surrounds the character with suspicion.


Location

Primary Location

The place that we have chosen to use for our thriller will be based in the Dunsby fens because it is an abandoned building and there is nothing around for miles. This is ideal because it will create the effect that the building is a perfect place for the protagonist to hide out.

Dirt Track
-This is a long dirt track leading up to the buildings.
-It will be used so that the 4x4 can drive down it towards the building. There will be puddles on the track (natural or man-made) which we can have the car drive through, showing a close-up, and we can have the soldiers running through them, showing a close-up again.

Abandoned Building
-This is an abandoned building in the open fen land.
-It will be used as a hide out by the protagonist because it is far away from civilisation and not in use so he will be out of the way. The building suggests that he has nowhere to go because he has committed some sort of crime.


Secondary Location
-This will simply be a short shot of a simple house in a village.
-The house will be used after the main titles when the time marker (1 week ago) appears. It will appear as if this could have been the mans old house before everything happened.

Thriller Task: Lighting

For our thriller we will mostly use natural lighting but we might use some torches.

For the scene where the protagonist is in the building we will just have natural lighting. If it is maybe too bright then we will try to cover up the windows with some sheets or ourselves. We will maybe try and make his face appear darker because this creates the effect of mystery.

When the car pulls up we will use natural lighting because it is outside.

When the soldiers are moving through the building we might put torches on their guns to shine more light and because it makes them seem more official.

 

' On The Run ' Timeline

- For this task we were asked to create a timeline for our film that we going to produce and then analyse similar films with opening titles like ours so here is my timeline:

The first part of the opening titles are going to consist of mainly long shots of the area and abandoned buildings that we were going to introduce the company and show that glen is in charge of the company and it is his vision to make these types of films with the Action/Psychological Thriller genre.

The second part of the titles will be showing the skills of the camera man Sam by using different shot and pans across hall ways in the buildings to show the passion Sam has with the camera and the shots he will be able to get to set the scene and to give it a mysterious feel about the setting which helps make the audience feel uncomfortable because anything could happen around the corner.

The third bit of the titles will to introduce you to the main character who is a run away convict that has committed a serious crime and now is running away from the police, the shots will be inside the rooms until its gets to the run away then you see the conditions the man is living in to hide from the police for example using dirty clothes, tinned food and a sleeping bag shows the man is living rough but he has no choice.

The final scene will be when the man is sitting against the wall and the shot will show the vehicle turn the corner and approach the area. The shot will be taken through the window facing both the man a the car.
the car will pull up the swat team will get out and get into position then storm the building then the screen will go black and show the title 'On The Run' in white in a torn/rustic look.

Linking this to other film

- The reason that we have chosen to do this genre (Action/Thriller) is because it create a scene from a place being deserted and quite to a hectic loud place for example in our film we will have a hidden place with abandoned building that the man will be hiding and from out of nowhere there will be a truck pull up with men wearing all black with guns to hunt down the man. I would link our film opening to 'Guns of Navarone 1961' because it shows a  quite abandoned temple that has been left in ruins because it has had war or a gun fight and has left the area in a bad way and now is damaged because of what has happened in the past.  It is not the same as ours but it shows how quite places can change in such a short period of time.

Location (On The Run)

The place that we have chosen to use for our thriller 'On The Run' will be based In the fens down Dunsby. the reason that we have used this location is because it is a deserted place with not a lot of life in the area. This will create a good scene because we want it to be a deserted area so it creates the sense of mystery.

As you look from a distance towards the abandon farm land there is a long dirt track that we will be able to use when the 4x4 pulls up down the track it will stand out because it is such a bold vehicle that will be holding some swat team to rush the convict out the building. As the men get out the car they will run to a holding position where they will run through puddles to show the bad conditions and the rough terrain. The abandon building shows that the person that is running away has no where to go because he has committed some sort of crime. So the place that the man runs away to shows that he has no other option to go there this is where we got out title from 'On The Run'.

We choose the area because we want the scene of a deserted area that soon turns, with the abandoned building we was going to put the criminal inside side to show he is living rough because he has no choice. we will use the dirt track for the vehicle to speed down the track.

The character that runs away has committed some sort of crime and will be punished if he is found, it will keep cutting to pictures of him with his family and his house like his life was normal until this incident happened and now he has to leave all that behind and escape from the police. he obviously the man has no option to run away because of what he has done.

That was founded in 1912 and is still running today over 100 years old that was found by these 3 great men, Adolph zukor, Jesse L Lasky and W W Hodkinson  and it is now own by the CEO Brad Grey where they are set up in Hollywood, Californina, USA.

Why Are They Suitable?
A company like Paramount Pictures would be a suitable comapny to look at when we create our Thriller film because over the years the comapny has produced some very big films that have been view all over the world with genres from Action to Psycoloical Thrillers which is what our film will contain, our film will be about a man that has esacaped prision and is running away from the Police/Army/Swat where he has hidden in a deserted building with a loaded weapon. the reason that the our team should look at Paramount Pictures is because they create 'Saving Private Ryan' which was based during WW2 with the army fighting against the Germans with Rifles.Also with the film 'The Ruins' and 'Shutter Island' because we were  was going to add a psycological twisted to the plot to confuse the audience.
